What should your business
fix first in SEO?
One customer journey.
One obstacle.
One next move.
Choose one important customer journey. Find the obstacle that stops it working. Give your next improvement a clear purpose.
Start with the business decision
Our starting point at OBVS is a question: which customer action would make this work worthwhile? A relevant consultation, a product purchase and a support answer require different pages. “More traffic” does not tell us which experience to improve. We want the right people to find an answer that helps them move toward a relevant purchase or relationship. Judge that work by suitable opportunities, customer value and revenue over the sales cycle.
Choose one offer, one audience and one useful action. Then follow the route a customer would take to get there. The sequence below is our prioritization method, not a search engine scoring formula. An urgent business problem can change the order.
We want [customer] to find [page], understand [decision] and take [action]. The obstacle we can currently demonstrate is [evidence].
01 / Can the page be reached?
Before rewriting a valuable page, check whether it can participate in search. Google’s minimum requirements include crawler access, a successful page response and indexable content. Meeting them creates eligibility, not a guarantee of indexing. Google: Search technical requirements ↗
Ask whoever manages your website to inspect the exact URL in Search Console. Check the indexed version and the live page; those are different views. Record any unintended indexing restriction, error or wrong destination. Keep customer-only and private pages private.
OBVS decision: if the intended public service page is unavailable, resolving that comes before publishing another article about the service. Confirm the fix on the same URL and keep a dated record.
02 / Does the destination fit the question?
Open the page as a first-time visitor. Can someone tell what is offered, who it serves, what matters in the decision and what to do next? A person comparing products needs different help from someone seeking instructions for a product they own.
Map a small set of actual questions from sales calls, support requests and available search data to your current pages. Where one useful page can answer closely related questions, improve it. Where the reader has a distinct task, give that task a suitable destination.
Link to that destination from relevant pages using text that tells readers what they will find. Google uses links to discover pages and understand context. Google: Crawlable links and descriptive anchor text ↗
A landscape studio receives inquiries outside its service area. Its page says “beautiful outdoor spaces” but gives no location or project scope. We would clarify service area, project types and the inquiry process before proposing a larger blog calendar. This is a hypothetical diagnosis, not a client result.
03 / Is there enough reason to trust the answer?
Look for the specific evidence a customer needs: relevant work, original photographs, a clear process, realistic limitations or an explanation of who is responsible. Replace unsupported superlatives with details a person can evaluate. Google’s content guidance asks whether information adds original value and establishes a trustworthy basis for its claims. Google: Creating helpful, reliable content ↗
For a business eligible for a Google Business Profile, also check accurate details and review practices. Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence; completing a profile does not remove the role of distance. Google: Improving local ranking ↗
OBVS decision: choose evidence that resolves the reader’s hesitation. More testimonials will not answer an unanswered question about availability or suitability.
04 / What changes for AI discovery?
We use AIO here to mean AI optimization, and GEO to mean generative engine optimization: work intended to make useful information discoverable and usable in AI answers. These terms are not a universal checklist shared by every provider.
For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, foundational SEO practices remain relevant, with no special additional optimization required. Keep essential explanations readable as text, describe your business consistently and support claims with evidence. Google: AI features and your website ↗
A private conversation that mentions your business is not proof of a public ranking signal. An accessible mention elsewhere may help people discover you, but we would not assign it a fixed “AI authority” value or promise citations.
Make one change you can evaluate
Write down the observed problem, the proposed fix, who owns it and the outcome you will inspect. Set the review period around your traffic and sales cycle; a quiet week cannot settle whether a strategy works.
For the landscape example, record relevant inquiries and service-area fit before and after the clarification. Note other changes, campaigns and seasonality. A difference is useful evidence to investigate, not automatic proof that one edit caused it.
Next, use the content blueprint if the missing piece is an answer. Use the measurement guide to define what progress means.
