A customer wants a rain jacket before a trip. They ask an AI assistant to find one under $200, check delivery by Friday, explain the return policy, and ask before placing an order.
For the retailer, that request contains several chances to help—and several places to lose the customer. The jacket might be suitable but unavailable in the right size. The delivery estimate might exclude processing time. The return policy might have an exception the summary missed.
The business needs to communicate enough for a decision and support what happens next. That is where the emerging agentic web becomes a practical business question.
We will follow this fictional purchase, alongside a service-booking example, through three articles. Try the decisions yourself as you read.
The request now contains a job
An AI search answer might identify several jackets and explain their differences. An agent with suitable tools and permission might continue: open the product page, check a variant, prepare a cart, and return for approval. Whether it can do those things depends on the product, the connected tools, the website, and the access granted.
OpenAI documents tools for operating browser and desktop interfaces. Anthropic documents a computer-use tool that applications execute in an environment they control. These are real capabilities, but neither establishes that every assistant can successfully shop at every store. OpenAI computer use · Anthropic computer use
For the customer, the useful instruction includes the conditions of a successful purchase and the point where approval is required. For the business, the question is whether those conditions can be checked. For the marketing team, a persuasive description is only part of the assignment; the facts behind the promise have to survive the whole journey.
Sometimes the agent divides the work
Imagine one worker checking jacket specifications while another investigates delivery and returns. A lead agent combines the findings and identifies unresolved details. That is a useful way to picture delegation, although implementations differ and some tasks need only one agent.
Spawning a subagent means starting another configured worker for a defined job. It does not mean the website gets to summon an independent army of shoppers. The customer’s application controls which workers and tools are available.
Anthropic’s published account of its Research system describes a lead agent coordinating parallel researchers. OpenAI’s Agents API also supports delegation. The practical lesson is that different pieces of your information may be inspected separately, so important qualifications need to stay attached to the claims they qualify. Keep that as a practical publishing habit, rather than treating it as a disclosed ranking factor. Anthropic research architecture · OpenAI Agents API
Where does the request get stuck?
Follow a fictional customer task. Then use the evidence checklist on one of your own pages.
Read the whole example
The jacket must be available in medium, cost less than $200 including charges, arrive at the customer’s destination by Friday, and have a suitable return policy. Even after those facts are checked, the customer asked to approve the order. For the garden visit, verify service area and work scope, distinguish an available time from an accepted appointment, and report a received request as pending until the business accepts it.
The provider name is only the beginning
The following examples were checked on October 26, 2026. They describe different product surfaces, not equivalent subscriptions or a performance ranking. Account, region, model, integration and rollout restrictions still need checking for the intended task.
OpenAI
the Agents API combines tools such as web search, computer use and connected services with delegation. A custom implementation still needs its own permissions and business connections. Documentation
Anthropic
Research illustrates coordinated investigation; the developer computer-use tool supports interface interaction. Research and computer use are distinct capabilities, not interchangeable modes. Research · Computer use
Meta
its Muse announcement describes a personal agent, connected applications and approval before sensitive actions. Those are Meta’s published product claims, not an OBVS independent security assessment. Announcement
xAI and Grok
developer documentation describes multi-agent research, web and X search, and remote MCP tools. It also warns that multiple agents can consume more tokens and tool calls. Research capability alone does not establish checkout access. Documentation
Search has its own AI discovery guidance; its Agent Development Kit separately supports multi-agent workflows. Preparing for Search and building a connected agent are different projects. Search guidance · Agent workflows
Microsoft
Copilot Studio supports tools with user authentication for restricted information or work performed on a user’s behalf. What the agent can do depends on the configured tools and credentials. Documentation
Perplexity
its Agent API documents web-search tools; separate crawler guidance explains access for search and user-directed retrieval. Neither is a promise that a particular business will be selected. Agent API · Crawler guidance
Give the customer something specific to work with
Return to the jacket. “Ready for any adventure” does not establish delivery, fit or waterproof performance. The useful record names the exact model and variant, explains the intended use, shows current availability, and makes shipping and return conditions easy to inspect.
A service business needs a different record. Suppose the request is, “Find a garden-maintenance company that serves my neighborhood and request a visit next Tuesday. Don’t pay a deposit without asking.” The important facts include service area, job scope, scheduling process, and whether the form requests a time or actually reserves one.
Those facts may be spread across a website, business profile, directory, booking service and social account. Our recommendation is to identify who maintains each source and resolve consequential contradictions. An outdated directory can still confuse a prospective customer even when the website is accurate.
Make the next step discoverable
There is no universal invitation that makes every AI service find, recommend and transact with a business. Public search access, source selection, and authorized action are separate decisions.
Google’s guidance still emphasizes useful content and established Search foundations. OpenAI separately documents search and training crawlers. We cover those foundations in How AI search actually works. Here, the additional job is to make the next step explicit: which page, form or supported connection lets the customer proceed? Use the discovery brief below to record one real customer task, the facts you can verify and the first unresolved question. Download it and give the fix an owner.
Before commissioning more content, choose one customer task. Follow it through your public presence, write down the first important question you cannot answer, and assign someone to resolve it. Customers can use the same method when an assistant’s recommendation sounds more complete than its evidence.
Turn one customer task into a useful brief.
Mark only what you have checked. A published claim is not necessarily a current fact. Your entries stay in this page until you download them; nothing is submitted to OBVS.
This creates a work brief, not an AI visibility score or a site scan.
